Glenlochy Distillery, Whisky Room 2005

"My rule of life prescribed as an absolutely sacred rite smoking cigars and also the drinking of alcohol before, after and if need be during all meals and in the intervals between them."

Winston Churchill

"Always remember that I have taken more out of alcohol than alcohol has taken out of me." -Winston Churchill

I'm on a whisky diet. I've lost three days already!
Tommy Cooper

No married man is genuinely happy if he has to drink worse whisky than he used to drink when he was single.
H. L. Mencken

Scotch Missed, The Lost Distillerires of Scotland, Brian Townsend,2000

Glenlochy Distillery (Closed 1983)
North Road, Fort William. Highland. PH33 6TQ. Scotland.

"For one brief decade until 1908, Fort William boasted three distilleries. Today the tally is one, Ben Nevis, now owned by Nikka Distillers of Japan. Like more than a few Scots towns, Fort William has seen what an up-and-down business distilling can be.

Glenlochy opened for business in 1898 under the mouth-filling name of Glenlochy-Fort William Distillery Company Limited.

For some years it may also have been a brewery and for much of its life it only knw closures. It shut down during World War I, then from 1919 to 1924 and also from 1926 to 1937. From 1934 to 1937 part of the premises was used by a motor hirer, but in 1937 the distillery was bought by Train McIntyre and transferred in 1938 to its subsidary, Associated Scottish Distillers Ltd. Train McIntyre and their assets were bought by DCL in 1953 and Glenlochy was passed to SMD.

Glenlochy and its two stills was among a dozen distilleries closed by SMD in the early 1980's. It's equipment was dismantled quickly and in April 1986, application to demolish was lodged with Lochaber District Council. The application was rejected and for several years the buildings and their 3-acre site fell into neglect and decay, though they were briefly used for a son-et-lumiere spectacle in 1991.

In 1992 the site was sold to West Coast Inns Ltd, a local hotel group. The pagoda roofed maltings and kilns - which were listed - have been preserved and are part of the new complex" (see picture).

From Collins Pocket Reference 'Whisky':
Glenlochy Distillery was built close to Loch Lochy at the southern end of the Caledonian Canal in a pretty setting on the outskirts of Fort Williams. It was built in 1900 with production beginning the following year. The single malt is now something of a rarity, as almost all of the distillery's produce went into blends. The situation will not improve, as Glelochy was closed by its parent company, United Distillers, in the 1980s, and sold outside the industry in 1991.
