Picture of Sunripe Peanuts factory before it was demolished. A Stroud & Co, 14-16,Green Lane, Hull. HU2 0HG The building in Green Lane that used to be the Sunripe Nuts factory - now sadly demolished) used to be a Brewery. According to Pat Aldabellea and Rob Barnard's book 'Hull and East Yorkshire Breweries' James Robinson founded the Victoria Brewery in Green Lane in 1851. Later a William Smith became the sole occupant of the Brewery in c1873. William Smith & Co Ltd leased some or all of its licensed property to Worthington & Co. Ltd in 1901. (The CAMRA book 'East Yorkshire Ale' states ' Worthington bought William Smith's Royal Victoria Brewery in Green Lane, Hull along with its 40 tied houses in 1901). T. Lindsey & Co, agents for Worthington, used the brewery as stores until 1913 and in 1919 Owen Bros purchased the brewery, which was used for commercial purposes. There is a nice B&W photo of the former Victoria Brewery in Rob Barnard and Pat Aldabella's book on page 58 where it states a painted Victoria Brewery sign could still be seen on the gable wall until comparatively recently. The book was produced in 1997 - and the photo shows a sign for A. Stroud & Co. - Information kindly received from Mr A. Sykes - nut aficionado.
